gabesson: "We realized that we can win and we started to stress"

The Hungarian side GameAgents had some openings in group C at WESG EU & CIS Regional Finals, but couldn't manage a win in their first three matches, leaving them without a chance to go on to the playoffs. After their loss to Russia, we talked to Gábor "gabesson" Málovics.

As big underdogs of group C, that features two contender teams Virtus.pro and Envy as well as strong national mixes Russia and Belgium, GameAgents had a good start to two matches, but struggled to close it out. Against Belgium, in the opener, the Hungarians got a good lead as Terrorists on Cache, but Kévin "⁠Ex6TenZ⁠" Droolans and co. woke up in the second half to lock it down. A similar story repeated against Russia on Train, as a strong start from GameAgents wasn't enough to keep their playoff dream alive.

The first goal for the team is to become one of the best teams in the Balkan region

After his team lost 16-13 to Denis "⁠seized⁠" Kostin and co., we talked to their in-game leader Gábor "⁠gabesson⁠" Málovics about playing this event, the roster, and Hungarian talent.

You've been around as a team for a while and then you qualified here for WESG, which is kind of a big tournament. At that moment, how did you feel, was this a big moment for you as a team?
Of course, it was, and it is still a big moment for us. We cannot advance out of the groups already but this the biggest tournament I've ever been at and it's same for the team. So it was a great chance for us. We mostly played well here, but then we did mistakes we never usually do and we had two games we should've won, I think. We fucked up. I think we could've played better, because we played versus mixes, it could have been better for us. EnVyUs was way better, we had no chance at all, but versus Belgium and Russia we could've won.
Can you walk me through the roster you have now, who does what on the team?
koloRRR is our AWPer and I think he is very talented. He is young so he does some mistakes that other members don't. But he is a really, really skilled player. I think he will be a great player soon, maybe not with us, maybe someone takes him—we will see. fleav is also 17-years-old only, he is not that experienced with his age. He is a carry, second in executes.
ZEN and flash are the most experienced players with myself. I am the in-game leader, I go in third in executes, I try to play something between a carry and a support, something like this. ZEN is now an entry player, but only for the last three days. He just joined our team because Barcode was lacking motivation and we had to change him, unfortunately, before the tournament. And flash is our lurker.
You started the tournament off against Belgium and you had a 9-1 lead or something similar, you were getting pretty loud, everything was going well. Are you that kind of a team, pretty momentum based, that gets hyped up when things go well?
Yeah I guess that at 9-1, or around that score, we realized that we can win and we started to stress—and we threw the game.
What was the biggest issue for you closing out that game on Cache?
I think we started to play more passive, we gave them space, we didn't stop their aggros and stuff. We just let them play their game and then we lost. They are better players individually and team-wise. If you let Ex6TenZ play his game, I think it's GG.
The match against Russia decided if you could advance further. You started well again, this time on the CT side. But at 8 rounds for you, they started coming back, was it the same issue you had in the first match?
We changed our playstyle, we started to do some mid aggresions and it went bad, really bad. We changed our game but I don't know why we changed, because it was a default playstyle, but it worked. We thought that we had to change something because they knew what we were doing. We changed - and we lost.
With a game ahead of you but no chances to advance, what is the team like moving forward, any plans, goals, tournaments lined up?
Yeah, we are in some leagues, we will attend two Balkan LANs soon, in Bucharest and Belgrade. We would like to play well there and we would like to be one of the best Balkan teams, like Windigo, Space Soldiers, something like that. Of course, it's far now, but it's the first goal I guess.
You mentioned koloRRR as one of the upcoming players in Hungary, is anything else going on there, some other talents rising?
There is another AWPer, Szőke "⁠Camper>#⁠" Tamás, he is doing well against everybody when he plays, but I can't name any other player.
Bringing this tournament to an end, what are you taking away from this tournament and what are you going to improve on going into the next couple of regional events you said you have planned?
I think we should play more calm. I think we need experience like this to play our game. To not be stressed, to be calm, and of course we need to practice much more than we did. I think we play about 20 hours a week together, and of course, who can, plays more individually, deathmatch and stuff. But it's not that much about the quantity, it's more about the quality of what we play.
